Job Description

Job Title: Prescribing Nurse or Paramedic Practitioner – UTCs (Somerset)
Location: Various Urgent Treatment Centres across Somerset
Contract Type: Locum / Bank / Permanent (flexible options)
Hours: Full-time, part-time, or flexible shifts available (including evenings/weekends)

About the Role

We are seeking experienced and autonomous Prescribing Nurse Practitioners or Paramedic Practitioners to join our dynamic teams across Urgent Treatment Centres (UTCs) in Somerset. This is a rewarding and fast-paced role for advanced clinicians who can independently manage a wide range of minor injuries and illnesses, including face-to-face assessments, diagnostics, and treatment.

You must be confident in clinical decision-making, independent prescribing, and hold IRMER and Red Dot competencies due to the injury presentations commonly seen in UTCs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, diagnose, treat, and discharge patients presenting with both minor illnesses and injuries.

  • Work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective care.

  • Interpret x-rays under Red Dot protocol and refer appropriately.

  • Order and interpret investigations including imaging and pathology.

  • Prescribe medications independently within your clinical competency.

  • Accurately document consultations, care plans, and referrals in line with governance standards.

  • Ensure safe and timely management of patients, escalating where necessary.

Essential Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (NMC) or Paramedic (HCPC) with valid registration.

  • Independent Prescriber (V300 qualification).

  • IRMER (Ionising Radiation Medical Exposure Regulations) training and compliance.

  • Red Dot x-ray interpretation training and experience.

  • Proven experience in urgent care, minor injuries units, A&E, or walk-in centres.

  • Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and decision-making skills.

  • Up-to-date DBS (or willing to apply) and mandatory training.

  • Excellent communication, documentation, and teamworking skills.

Desirable

  • Advanced Practice MSc or equivalent experience.

  • Familiarity with clinical systems such as EMIS or SystmOne.

  • Previous experience working across multiple UTC or urgent care settings.

What We Offer

  • Competitive hourly rates (dependent on experience and shift type).

  • Flexible working patterns across multiple sites in Somerset.

  • Supportive and collaborative clinical environments.

  • Opportunities for ongoing professional development.

  • Long-term and ad-hoc shifts available to suit your schedule.
